Gisborne Thistle is proud to be official Pre-Academy Centre (PAC) partners with the Wellington Phoenix, New Zealands' only current professional club!

The Wellington Phoenix PAC at Gisborne Thistle is offered for players in 8th-14th Grade and is designed and developed by the professional coaches at the Wellington Phoenix!

As the only professional football club in NZ, it is the remit of WPX to ensure all young Kiwi players are given the opportunity to step onto the WPX pathway.

The PACs are designed to be hosted at various partner clubs & schools, spanning the length & width of NZ to ensure the WPX is a visible presence throughout NZ. The PAC Program is an important part of the WPX pathway. It exists to identify players who may have the potential to represent WPX Academy, as well as connecting more players, coaches, parents, clubs & schools to the WPX through positive engagement and exclusive development opportunities.

The PAC Program is designed to be a resource for the partner club, to complement their existing programs and improve their capability and reach, benefitting those within the program.

The Phoenix Training Program is informed by contemporary theories of skill acquisition. A highly Game-Based style of training, the PAC training program is designed using the Whole-Part-Whole method of skill learning, supported by a Constraints-Led Approach to coaching and underpinned by a Player-Centered mindset to develop skilful, independent players.

Wellington Phoenix will provide all PAC players, parents and coaches with access to the Wellington Phoenix Development Hub. The WPX Development Centre is an online platform that aims to connect, educate and inspire the players, coaches, parents & clubs who participate in the PAC program. Access to the WPX Development Centre will connect Players & Parents to exclusive, targeted content that encourages positive player development. This will include webinars with a range of guests & topics on offer. Other content that will be available will include training videos, interviews with first team players and specialist speakers & highlights.

In 2024 the Gisborne Thistle and Wellington Phoenix PAC will run on Monday evenings.

Players are able to purchase WPX Players Kit Bundle, (which includes shirt, shorts, socks and cap), these are recommended for use at all training sessions but are not essential.
